Description

JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to: Director of Public Works • Operates and maintains solid waste collection vehicles • Hauls waste, recyclables, and organics from collection routes to Municipality of the County of Victoria Transfer Stations • Operates Municipal waste collection vehicle throughout Victoria County • Operates controls on waste collection vehicle to safely and successfully complete collection • Performs vehicle pre-trips each day prior to leaving the site • Performs general vehicle maintenance on waste collection vehicle each day; greases and lubricates all moving parts; checks and replaces necessary fluids; monitors tire pressure and wear • Pick-up and dispose of residential waste, recyclables and organics as required throughout the Municipality of the County of Victoria • Maintains contact with administration office at all times • Ensures route collection is performed in a safe and timely manner • Must deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service. The Driver must make note of and report on any such complaints • Maintains driver logbook, inspection report (pre-trip, en-route, post-trip), accident or incident reports • Ensures trucks and equipment are safely and securely stored • Advises the Collection Supervisor/Director of Public Works of any requirements for maintenance or repairs • Practices workplace safety • Handles, carries and empties receptacles containing solid waste (Up to 22 kg (45 lbs) • When not assigned to a collection vehicle, perform maintenance such as cleaning of collection vehicles and helping in vehicle maintenance activities • Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: Experience with tandem trucks and equipment safety • Demonstrated ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner • Knowledge of garbage truck operation • Knowledge of garbage collection and disposal procedures • Experience with records keeping systems • Experience with equipment cleaning and standards • Experience with the hazards associated with operating equipment • Effective verbal and listening communication skills • Ability to record and maintain records • Stress/time management skills • Analytical and problem solving skills • Ability to load, and unload collection vehicles and vehicle ancillary equipment (e.g., compaction and automation levers) • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Skills to maneuver vehicles safely through traffic, commercial and residential areas. Specific Qualifications Required: • Class 3 or better driver’s license with air brake certification and a clean drivers abstract.
